WOODSTOCK -- The catastrophic Haitian earthquake has led to
Woodstock-based World Foundation for Children's biggest mission yet --
making room for more orphans in a country already full of orphans. It
comes with a big price tag.
World Foundation for Children was started by Woodstock resident Bob
Blair, whose former Christmas tree farm became the Volunteer Farm that
supplies fresh fruits and vegetables to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
The Volunteer Farm Network this week provided 670
lbs. of fresh meat to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank as part of its continuing
effort to ensure that even the most disadvantaged Virginians have access to a
fresh, healthy diet.
The Volunteer Farm Network, a program of the
World Foundations for Children, last year provided over 300 lbs. of meat to
the food bank, in addition to its record harvest of 65 tons of vegetables. Both the livestock and processing were made
possible through the generous donations of WFC supporters.
The Volunteer
Farm Network, now in its sixth year, recently renewed its commitment to provide
nutrition-boosting foods to over a third of the Commonwealth, largely with the
help of volunteers.Since most of those
volunteers are under the age of 18, the farm does double duty by providing an
opportunity to show young people the value of service to their community.
