(1) Preparation
- The process of preparing the land for planting to include picking up
rocks and other small debris from the fields. Picking rocks improves
the soil and saves the equipment from damage. This season begins around
the end of October and can run through March. (Youngsters love picking rocks.)
(2) Planting SeasonStarts in April and runs through the end of Summer. There are several
different methods from getting the seed into the ground, depending on
the crop. To the right, a gentlement pushes a seed planter.
Since we are planting more than 30 acres, there is plenty of work to go
around.
(3) Maintenance - We need assistance with
caring for the crops while they are in the growing season. Some
of the tasks include weeding and irrigation. We start this
process in May and continue through the harvest season as needed.
(4) Harvest Season - This is the time to
collect the fresh vegetables that have been grown. The process of
harvesting will depend on the type of vegetable. The important
thing to remember is that all items harvested are weighed, so we can
keep track of the amount of food being donated.
(5) Office Work
The Volunteer Farm needs assistance all year round with the various office tasks to include mailings, data entry and filing.
